For the Love of Black

 10/19/2014

Shirt & Pants: Forever 21 // Heels: Enzo Angiolini

I love me some black neutrals. For those that have been following me on Instagram a while, you may have noticed how often I wear it. In fact, it is my favorite color...or lack of color, for those who are technical ;) I feel its the perfect way to take brighter summery clothes and transition it into fall-winter. I wore this simple, billowy top with some bright stretchy pants and snake skin heels. I love that black is so versatile, and especially love the peep holes on the back of this top.

This was the perfect outfit for a family dinner with my husbands side. It was his grandmas birthday and we had gone out for some Asian food, which coincidentally, is also my favorite. I was 33 1/2 weeks along, fighting a head cold and had started growing in leaps and bounds giving me some major hip pains. But I wouldn't have passed up the opportunity to enjoy my favorite food, that's for sure! So glad we went, and had fun. Great, now I'm craving some rice and chicken... mmm mmm! Hope you all enjoy your weekend and go out and do something fun. Thanks for stopping by :)

Family Fall Session

10/25/2014

In the most stunning grove of trees full of crunchy colorful leaves that simply exude Autumn...this was our sad attempt at getting a few family photos. We were taking pics for my sisters little family and figured it would be such a beautiful spot to take some with our family as well. BUT our little toddler was having none of that. She normally looks at the camera and smiles with no issues. The best little model around! But ofcourse when we actually want some photos with her she decided to be uncooperative. Any parent can probably relate, once the kiddos are past 1 they seem to lose any interest of posing for family pics. Its like a whole new child is brought out during photo shoots. The best we got were a few fake smiles from Eliana and a few mid-escape shots while holding her. lol Maybe next time.

I did however get a few sweet moments with my amazing stud of a husband. He truly makes my heart skip a beat with his megawatt smile. He is the most caring and incredible daddy to our daughter. Always playing with her, sharing his meals/snacks, showing her anything hes doing and trying to steal kisses. It makes my heart full to see them together. Especially when he reads books to her and I see her huge grin as she stares up at him and he smiles at her. They have such a beautiful bond. I am blessed to have him as a father to my children.

He takes such great care of me as well. Always asking how I'm doing and always so thoughtful. My comfort is always a priority. As soon as he comes home he takes over watching and caring for our Eliana. Always so understanding and sympathetic to anything that bothers me. If he could, he would sit my bum on the couch and not have me move at all. But anyone that knows me, knows that is not something I enjoy immensely. There's always something to do or take care of. I definitely have been trying to rest more with this 3rd trimester though...especially with my baby belly growing so much as of late.

We are hoping to take some more successful fall photos before the leaves all fall to the ground and winter sets in...but for now I will just enjoy our little family of 3 this last month. Cozy cuddles indoors and brisk adventures outside. We are loving fall so so much right now. There truly is nothing like it! Thanks for stopping by my friends :)

Geeky Chic

Boots: BCBGeneration / Dress: Shabby Apple  / Jacket: Forever 21 / Scarf: Forever 21

Being a mommy, and preggo at that, my normal day to day look is with my hair up and my geek glasses on. If my hair is down at the beginning of the day it ends up wrapped up in a topknot at some point throughout the day. So, naturally I look for comfort in all I wear. Which, at this point in my pregnancy, is pretty much dresses...ALL THE TIME.

Being 6 feet tall, finding dresses that fit this long torso of mine is quite the challenge. You can imagine my joy and happiness when I came across this website, called Shabby Apple. They have a very large selection of beautiful dresses practically sewn with me in mind (happy dance). Simple, comfortable, elegant, beautiful and most importantly long. They carry dresses that come down to my knees or even my ankles if I so choose. This my friends, rarely (if ever) happens and is a cause for celebration when it does :) I ordered this wrap dress several sizes too large, trying to compensate for this growing bump. Next time I will be ordering my exact size.

Today's weather was perfectly chilly and breezy. I paired this dress with my favorite suede boots, a super soft, over-sized scarf and a light jacket. Absolutely perfect for me. I get hot so easily during pregnancy. I love wearing plenty of layers I could take off if I feel overheated or put on as needed. I was so comfy and you can be sure I will be wearing this dress on repeat this last month of my pregnancy and afterwards as well.

PREGNANCY UPDATE:
We are nearing 35 weeks and feeling so strong. We have officially made it past 34 1/2 weeks this time around, praise God! This is my second pregnancy, yet everything is so new to me at this point. We are starting our weekly checkups with the doctor and boy are we growing! At our last checkup, few days shy of 34 weeks, we were measuring at 36 weeks! That's over 2 weeks ahead...This little girl is growing so well; will be big and strong, like her mama. She is already a little character, pushed back at every touch the doctor made. Even when we simply listened to her heart beat. :) She started sleeping for larger periods of time in recent weeks and whenever she is awake she never stops moving. Always stretching/pushing with her legs and bum or tapping with her little hands. We just have 1 month to go, give or take, and I am so extremely in love with her already!

I've been feeling the nesting bug taking over me recently. I can think of so many things I want to get done before we meet this little one. We have slowly started working on moving our eldest, Eliana, out of the nursery and into the room next door. I am hoping they will be great sleeping next door to each other, not waking one another. That is one thing I have been extremely nervous about. I expect to be lacking a lot of sleep myself, feeding around the clock. But I am REALLY hoping Eliana will continue sleeping well. In the last year and a half, I can count maybe a total of 30-50 days where she slept through the night. These last few weeks being the majority of it. She is finishing up getting all her teeth, just 4 back molars to go. And this mama has been enjoying SO many cuddles, hugs and kisses; Eliana recently learned to give kisses. Its the sweetest thing!!! For now, I will be enjoying my opportunity to sleep and will be giving our eldest all the attention I can as we prepare for the arrival of her little sister some time around Thanksgiving.

If anyone has any experience or advise they can share on how its been introducing a second sibling, I would love any tips or comments you may have to give :) Thanks for stopping by!

Bumpin' A Green Dress

 10/16/2014
Dress: Forever 21 / Opaque Black Tights: find here / Clutch: Forever 21 / Black Pumps: by Miss Me

When you find yourself amongst such glorious bursts of color, what to do accept twirl? And twirl some more. The cool refreshing wind rustling the leaves, sunshine warming the skin and gloomy clouds floating past in the sky...once again, this is proving to be my favorite season yet! I'm even more excited for this cooler weather because I can transition my summer clothes right into fall by simply adding tights or sweaters. Makes it so much easier to dress this ever growing bump.

Whenever I shop for my bump, I always look for non-maternity clothing, so I could wear it after my pregnancies as well. I simply fell in love with this green dress when I found it at Forever21. Girly and pretty with just a touch of sexy thanks to the deep V in the back. With a flowey skirt and soft material, its definitely a favorite. I simply paired it with a colorful clutch, black tights, platform heels, and braided up my hair - letting the dress and bump have center stage.

 PREGNANCY UPDATE:
On this glorious day I am blessed to have made it to 33 weeks and counting...Just over 6 weeks to go, if that. Third trimester we just both grow. My baby girl is approximately 19 inches long and topping out at a whopping 4 1/2 pounds. Imagine a honeydew curled up inside a watermelon and you can know what I'm dealing with here. My baby girl is consistently active and SO strong! 24/7 she is nudging, kicking and tapping away. She is getting cramped in there, I can feel every movement and can see my stomach rocking whenever she moves to get comfortable. She already brings me so much joy and I keep imaging how she will look, smell, feel...simply holding her tiny little body in my arms, close to me.

While she is comfy as can be, this mama is having quite the time. Constant and strong braxton hicks contractions, which at times make me feel like my stomach will burst as it hardens my abdomen! Itchy skin as it stretches. The worst car sickness and my never leaving friend morning/ day sickness.  Painful round ligament pains also have been kicking my booty. Cant seem to get comfortable especially while staying busy and keeping up with my 18 month old toddler. I've tried laying down, getting comfy but that only serves to make me feel even stiffer when I get up; making me waddle and limp at times, feeling like an old lady. If any of you mamas have any tips I would greatly welcome the suggestions!

Most importantly though, I am yet to experience any contractions as I had with Eliana. With my first pregnancy, they started at 20 weeks and would occasionally happen and made me and my family worry. I ended up having her at only 34 1/2 weeks, and we still don't know what caused her to arrive early. We are praying and hoping I carry to full term this time around. It will be so magical to hold my baby the same day I deliver her and not have to wait a whole day... Getting to bring my baby home the next day and not spend any time driving day after day to the NICU is something we are yet to experience and are so excited for! So far I feel strong, baby feels high and we are doing great! Praise God! We are heading in for our weekly check ups with the doctor, so we will be keeping a close eye on this little one.

Autumn Pumpkin Pie

Today was the perfect fall day, made for baking. Overcast, grey and absolutely perfect! We even had a pretty crazy wind/dust storm and some sprinkling of rain. My sort of heaven. :) With my toddler Eliana watching, always my little helper, I rolled up my sleeves and got to work.

My sister, Julez, had given me fresh pumpkin, that she had already sweetened and pureed for me. So, what else to make with it than some fresh, homemade Pumpkin Pie! I fell in love with baking pies, having made my first one this past summer. I decided to give this one a whirl. I found a recipe for a very delicious and creamy filling which I tweaked a bit. If you wish to see the original, use the following Pumpkin Pie recipe.

I already have a recipe for the most perfect crust, that's made from scratch. I'd say it's quite yummy. I had used it for peach pies during peach season and they were so delicious every time. And most importantly simple. You can prepare this pie crust the day before, to avoid the wait the day of baking.

It turned out so delicious, not overly sweet, creamy and worth sharing. I made the large pie for my husband to take to a potluck at work. I also made a tiny sample pie in a souffle bowl as well so we can do a taste test. I would say it turned out yummy. My husband nearly gobbled it up before Eliana spotted him eating and begged for some as well.

LILY'S PUMPKIN PIE

PIE CRUST:
1 3/4 cups Flour
3/4 cup Unsalted Butter, cold (1 1/2 sticks)
3 tablespoons Sugar
1/2 teaspoon Salt
5-7 tablespoons Water, cold

PUMPKIN FILLING:
1 1/2  (8oz.) packages Cream Cheese, softened
3 1/2 cups Pumpkin, mashed (canned)
1 1/2 cups Sugar
1/4 teaspoon Salt
2 Eggs + 4 Egg Yolks, whisked slightly
1 cup Half and Half or Whipping Cream
1/2 cup Butter, melted (1 stick)
1 1/2 teaspoons Vanilla Extract
1 teaspoon Cinnamon

1. Begin with making the pie dough. In a medium mixing bowl, pour in flour. Cube in cold butter. Combine the flour and butter with your hands, until the texture is crumbly and fine.
2. Add in sugar and salt into the crumbly flour and mix lightly.
3. Add cold water, 1 tablespoon at a time, while mixing with your hands. Lightly knead the dough into a soft but firm ball. Place the ball of dough on a lightly floured surface.
4. Use a pin to roll it out into a round crust that is big enough to drape over the pie pan. I use a large 11 1/2 inch ceramic pan.
5. Drape the dough over the pan, making sure that it covers the full inside of the pan.
6. Press and flatten the edges of the crust against the rim of the pan. Take a knife and cut the excess off. Another option would be to fold the excess edges underneath, along the rim of the pan, which would make the edges a bit thicker (I'll be doing that next time so the edges of the crust don't crack while baking, due to being too thin).
7. Crimp and shape the edge of the pie crust using two hands. Using your thumb on one hand and two fingers on your opposite hand, lightly squish the edges in all around the pan. (The following pictures show each hand separately, but you would do it simultaneously.)
8. Place the prepared pie crust into the freezer to chill for 1 hour. This is where making it the night before would come in handy so you don't have to wait. You want it to be chilled at least an hour in order to avoid shrinking as much when you pre-bake the crust.

While we waited, I gave Eliana her first bit of dough to play with. She of course had to shred the dough... but hey! even with teething, she only tried to eat it a few times. We played for a little while making balls and placing them in her measuring cup. We both had so much fun! Such joy in the simple things. And how perfectly adorable are her pudgy little fingers? I just melt.

9. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
10. Take the firm and chilled pie crust out of the freezer. Cover the pie crust shell completely with aluminum foil. You can use parchment paper to line the dough as well. Fill the shell up to the edges with pie weights or dried beans to weigh the crust down and keep it from bubbling up while baking.
11. Place the pan into the oven and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and weights. Bake an additional 10 minutes or until the pie crust is dried out and turned lightly golden.
12. While baking the crust, begin mixing the pumpkin filling. (I use a Kitchen Aid Mixer) In a large mixer, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth. If you didn't have time to soften yours, you can slice it and soften for 30-60 seconds in the microwave as a last resort.
13. Add the mashed pumpkin and beat until combined. Add the sugar and salt and mix some more. Since mine was already prepped, I just poured my sweetened pumpkin into the cream cheese.
14. In a medium mixing bowl, combine the eggs, yolks, whipping cream and melted butter. Take a whisk and mix together. Add to the cream cheese and pumpkin. Beat with the mixer until combined.
15. Finally, add the vanilla and cinnamon and mix until combined. The filling is ready.
16. Once the pie crust is done baking and golden, pour the filling into the warm crust and bake for 50 minutes or until the center is set. While the pie is baking, if you notice the edges of the crust are getting browned too quickly, cover the edges with foil.
 17. Carefully take out the pie and cool to room temperature. Usually takes several hours or longer.
18. After the pie is completely cooled, you can refrigerate it, depending on your preference, you can serve it at room temperature as well. Slice the pie and top with whipped cream. My husband prefers it that way.
